Synthethic Division |
||
Synthetic division is a shortcut to divide polynomials. *This method can only be used if the divisor is in the form (x-a)! Step 1: Write out the coefficients of the dividend. (Use 0 as a coefficient for missing terms) Step 2: Put the value of 'a' of the divisor in the upper left hand corner and box it. Step 3: Under a horizontal bar, bring down the first coefficient. Step 4: Multiply the first coefficient by the division. Write the product under the next coefficient, Add the numbers in the new column. Step 5: Repeat step 4 until all the columns are done. Box the last sum. Step 6: The boxed number becomes the remainder, and the other sum become the coefficients of the terms in the quotient polynomial. (ordered from decreasing degree) |
